This handmade drawing portrays the early Twin Cam 88 model A, the engine that ushered Harley-Davidson into the 21st century. Introduced in September 1998 for the 1999 model year, the Twin Cam Big Twin replaced the long-serving Evolution with a stronger, smoother, and more efficient design.
Featuring dual camshafts, improved oiling, and a stiffer crankcase, the 88 cu in (1450 cc) engine delivered better cooling and higher reliability — while keeping the classic pushrod soul that defined Harley’s V-Twin heritage. The illustration shows the early configuration, complete with its factory air cleaner, capturing the look of the first-generation Twin Cam as it appeared on models such as the FXD Dyna Super Glide, FLH Electra Glide, and Softail series.
Two distinct versions were produced: the Twin Cam A, rubber-mounted for Dyna and Touring bikes, and the Twin Cam B, counterbalanced for Softails.
Over time, the engine evolved into 96, 103, and 110 cu in displacements, remaining the heartbeat of Harley-Davidson motorcycles until the arrival of the Milwaukee-Eight in 2017.
