This handmade drawing depicts the early Twin Cam 88, shown here in its purest, carbureted form — equipped with the Keihin CV40 carburetor that defined Harley-Davidson’s last generation of factory Big Twins before fuel injection took over.

Introduced in September 1998 for the 1999 model year, the Twin Cam 88 marked a major leap forward in performance and refinement.
With dual camshafts, a stronger crankcase, and improved oil circulation, it delivered smoother power while keeping the unmistakable feel and rhythm of Harley’s V-Twin heritage.

The CV40 carburetor, used until 2006, gave the Twin Cam a responsive, analog character — easy to tune, rich in sound, and beloved by riders who preferred the raw, mechanical connection of a true carbureted engine. Available in 88 cu in (1450 cc) form, it powered early models like the FXD Dyna Super Glide, FLSTF Fat Boy, and FLH Electra Glide, setting the tone for Harley’s modern era.

Later versions evolved into 96, 103, and 110 cu in displacements, but for many purists, the CV40-fed 88 remains the most authentic Twin Cam ever built.
