1970-1985 Shovelhead — Harley-Davidson Engine Print
This handmade drawing depicts the Cone Shovelhead, Harley-Davidson’s second generation of Shovelhead Big Twin engines, produced from 1970 to 1985 (FLH Police 1985 models). Introduced as the successor to the short-lived Generator Shovelhead, this redesigned version replaced the front-mounted generator with an alternator integrated into the engine’s right-side cone-shaped timing case — giving the engine its distinctive name.
The illustration shows the engine in its pure mechanical form, without the air cleaner, revealing the elegant lines of the original factory carburetor and the sculpted symmetry of Harley-Davidson’s 1970s engineering. Available in 74 cu in (≈1200 cc) and later 80 cu in (≈1340 cc) versions, the Cone Shovelhead powered iconic models like the FLH Electra Glide, FX Super Glide, and FXE Low Rider.
Representing Harley-Davidson’s resilience through the challenging AMF years, the Shovelhead became the defining Big Twin of the 1970s and early 1980s — a symbol of the era’s power, individuality, and custom culture.
Each print is part of a collector’s series celebrating Harley-Davidson engines across more than a century of history. Perfect for enthusiasts, workshops, or anyone who values vintage engineering and design.
