1966–1969 Generator Shovelhead — Harley-Davidson Engine Print
This handmade drawing depicts the Generator Shovelhead, Harley-Davidson’s first generation of Shovelhead Big Twin engines, produced from 1966 to 1969. Introduced as the successor to the Panhead, this transitional design retained the front-mounted generator while introducing new aluminum heads with improved combustion chambers and stronger cooling fins — giving rise to the nickname “Shovelhead” for their shovel-shaped rocker covers.
Displacing 74 cu in (≈1200 cc), the Generator Shovelhead powered models such as the FL and FLH Electra Glide, marking the beginning of a new era of Harley-Davidson performance. Although produced for only four years, it bridged classic and modern engineering — combining the style of the Panhead with the technical foundation of the later Cone Shovelhead introduced in 1970.
Today, the Generator Shovelhead remains a favorite among purists and restorers — a rare blend of Panhead charm and Shovelhead muscle.
Each print is part of a collector’s series celebrating Harley-Davidson engines across more than a century of history. Perfect for enthusiasts, workshops, or anyone who values vintage engineering and design.
