1957–1985 Ironhead (Late Model) — Harley-Davidson Engine Print
This handmade drawing depicts the later version of Harley-Davidson’s Ironhead engine — part of the legendary Sportster line produced from 1957 to 1985. While the first generation (1957–1969) laid the foundation for Harley’s middleweight performance bikes, the redesigned 1970–1985 Ironhead brought major updates in strength, reliability, and electrical performance.
The revised engine cases introduced in 1970 featured an integrated alternator and improved oil circulation, marking a clear step forward in engineering.
Displacement grew to 61 cu in (≈1000 cc), giving the Ironhead a stronger torque curve and smoother power delivery, while retaining the unmistakable mechanical character of the Sportster. Used in models such as the XLH1000, XLCH1000, and XR1000, the late Ironhead became a favorite among riders and custom builders through the 1970s and early 1980s. Its rugged design, iron heads, and raw exhaust note made it an enduring icon of Harley-Davidson performance and style.
Each print is part of a collector’s series celebrating Harley-Davidson engines across more than a century of history. Perfect for enthusiasts, workshops, or anyone who values vintage engineering and design.
