1957–1985 Ironhead (Early Model) — Harley-Davidson Engine Print
This handmade drawing depicts the early version of Harley-Davidson’s Ironhead engine — part of the legendary Sportster line produced from 1957 to 1985.
The first generation, built between 1957 and 1969, marked Harley-Davidson’s move from side-valve to overhead-valve (OHV) performance, replacing the earlier Model K. Featuring cast-iron cylinder heads, a unit-construction crankcase combining the engine and gearbox, and a displacement of 55 cu in (≈883 cc), the early Ironhead delivered both strength and speed in a compact frame. Models like the XL, XLH, and high-performance XLCH became symbols of raw American performance and independence through the 1960s.
In 1970, Harley-Davidson redesigned the engine cases and electrical system, giving rise to the later-generation Ironhead (1970–1985).
This artwork captures the spirit of the original — rough, mechanical, and full of attitude — the foundation of Harley-Davidson’s Sportster legend.
Each print is part of a collector’s series celebrating Harley-Davidson engines across more than a century of history. Perfect for enthusiasts, workshops, or anyone who values vintage engineering and design.
