1952–1956 Model K — Harley-Davidson Engine Print
This handmade drawing depicts Harley-Davidson’s Model K engine, produced from 1952 to 1956 — the direct ancestor of the legendary Sportster line. Compact and mechanically advanced for its time, the K-Series introduced a unit-construction design, combining the engine and gearbox into a single crankcase — a major step forward from earlier Flathead layouts. Powered by a 45 cu in (≈742 cc) side-valve (Flathead) engine, the Model K offered a lower center of gravity, improved handling, and smoother performance compared to its Big Twin counterparts. Variants such as the KK, KH, and high-performance KHK brought stronger compression, upgraded cams, and a sportier character, making them favorites among riders and racers of the 1950s.
The Model K bridged two eras in Harley-Davidson history — blending classic Flathead reliability with modern engineering. Its foundation directly evolved into the Ironhead Sportster of 1957, setting the stage for one of the most enduring motorcycle lineages in the world.
Each print is part of a collector’s series celebrating Harley-Davidson engines across more than a century of history. Perfect for enthusiasts, workshops, or anyone who values vintage engineering and design.
