This handmade drawing depicts Harley-Davidson’s 1942 WLA Flathead — the iconic 45″ (≈739 cc) side-valve engine built for wartime service during World War II.
Derived from the civilian WL model, the WLA was adapted for military use with ruggedized components, simplified maintenance, and standardized parts for global deployment.
Between 1940 and 1945, over 90,000 WLAs were produced, serving Allied forces around the world. Reliable, easy to repair, and capable of running in harsh conditions, the WLA became known as the “Liberator”, carrying messengers, scouts, and soldiers across Europe, Africa, and the Pacific.
More than a motorcycle, it became a mechanical symbol of freedom and resilience — a lasting testament to American engineering and the role Harley-Davidson played in history.
