1937–1948 Flathead U-Series — Harley-Davidson Engine Print
This handmade drawing depicts Harley-Davidson’s Flathead U-Series, produced from 1937 to 1948 — the final generation of Big Twin side-valve engines. Available in 74 cu in (≈1213 cc) and 80 cu in (≈1340 cc) versions, the U-Series refined the proven Flathead design with stronger cases, improved oiling, and better cooling, while retaining the quiet power and bulletproof simplicity that made it a favorite among riders and mechanics alike.
Built alongside the emerging overhead-valve Knucklehead, the U-Series remained the workhorse of the lineup — reliable, forgiving, and easy to service.
From police bikes to long-distance tourers, these engines earned a reputation for smooth torque and endless endurance.
The 1948 model year marked the end of Harley-Davidson’s Big Twin Flathead production, closing an era of nearly twenty years of dependable, side-valve performance.
Each print is part of a collector’s series celebrating Harley-Davidson engines across more than a century of history. Perfect for enthusiasts, workshops, or anyone who values vintage engineering and design.
