This handmade drawing depicts Harley-Davidson’s legendary Knucklehead engine, produced from 1936 to 1947 — shown here in its earliest and rarest form, the “Frog Eye” configuration from 1936–1937. This nickname comes from the distinctive round bolts on the rocker covers, which protrude like a pair of frog’s eyes — a small yet iconic detail found only on the very first Knucklehead engines.
As Harley-Davidson’s first overhead-valve (OHV) Big Twin, the Knucklehead represented a major leap forward in performance and reliability.
Initially offered as the EL 61 cu in (≈1000 cc) and later expanded to 74 cu in (≈1207 cc), it combined mechanical refinement with unmistakable design.
The “Frog Eye” version captures the beginning of that story — raw, innovative, and beautifully crafted — setting the stage for one of the most admired engines in American motorcycle history.
