1929–1931 Flathead D-Series — Harley-Davidson Engine Print
This handmade drawing depicts Harley-Davidson’s pioneering Flathead D-Series, produced from 1929 to 1931 — the company’s first generation of side-valve (flathead) engines. Displacing 45 cubic inches (≈737 cc), the D-Series introduced a new era of reliability and simplicity. Its compact, low-compression design delivered smooth torque, cool running, and exceptional durability — the ideal balance for everyday riders facing the challenges of the Great Depression.
Though modest in displacement, the D-Series laid the foundation for Harley-Davidson’s long-lived Flathead family. Its mechanical layout became the basis for the later R, W, and G (Servi-Car) engines that defined Harley’s reputation for endurance and ease of service.
The D-Series marks the beginning of nearly half a century of side-valve engineering — a true turning point in Harley-Davidson history.
Each print is part of a collector’s series celebrating Harley-Davidson engines across more than a century of history. Perfect for enthusiasts, workshops, or anyone who values vintage engineering and design.
