1909-1911 Atmospheric V-Twin — Harley-Davidson Engine Print

This handmade drawing is inspired by early photographs and scarce documentation of Harley-Davidson’s first V-Twin engine. Originally revealed as a prototype at the 1907 Chicago Auto Show, it entered limited production in 1909. Displacing 49.5 cu in (≈810 cc) and producing around 7 horsepower, it featured vacuum-operated (atmospheric) intake valves — an experimental design that was soon replaced by mechanically actuated systems in 1911. Although only a few were built, this engine marked the beginning of Harley-Davidson’s V-Twin legacy — a bold mechanical step that shaped the brand’s future.
