HD Evolution
The Evolution’s 80 cubic-inch (approx. 1.3-liter) engine was close to the Big Twin line that comes with many Harley-Davidson models such as the Softail, Dyna, Touring, and more. This engine appeared in 1984 and continued the development of the Big Twin line that had taken off in 1936 with the introduction of the Knucklehead model.
The Evolution’s 80-cubic-inch engine offered better performance and reliability than older Harley-Davidson powertrains such as the Shovelhead and Panhead. It was a V-Twin power unit, air-cooled, equipped with hydraulic cam lifters. The 80 cubic-inch Evolution engine also had a fuel injection system on later models, which improved fuel economy and performance.
The 80 cubic-inch Evolution engine was very popular with Harley-Davidson enthusiasts and became one of the most recognizable pieces of motorcycle culture. The introduction of this engine enabled the company to further develop the Big Twin line, which remains a key part of the Harley-Davidson lineup to this day.
